Mr. Fung has more than sixteen
years of experience in venture capital investing, and more than 26
years of experience with emerging and established technology companies.
Mr. Fung is an accredited venture investor, and Managing Director
of FarSight Ventures, a venture capital fund (in formation) that focuses
on investments in the Technology, Media and Communications (TMC) sectors
in the United States and the Greater China region.
Mr. Fung was recently a
Managing Director at Zero Stage Capital where he worked between 1992
and 2004. At Zero Stage Capital, he led investments in software, IT
infrastructure, communications and Internet companies. Previously,
he was with Advent International between 1990 and 1992, where he worked
in the Far East Group and invested in opportunities that had direct
relevance to Asia. Before becoming a venture capitalist, he held software
engineering and product management positions at venture-backed Teradata
Corporation (now part of NCR Corporation: NYSE:NCR) during its formative
stage, and sales and marketing position at IBM Corporation (NYSE:IBM).
As a venture capitalist, Mr. Fung led investments in SystemSoft Corporation,
Infonautics, Inc., 24/7 Real Media, Inc., About, Inc., Be, Inc., RoweCom,
Inc., and Silknet Software, Inc., which had had successful initial
public offerings in the US NASDAQ market. Mr. Fung also led investments
in Waypoint Software, Inc. (acquired by Open Market, Inc.), Xynetix
Design Systems, Inc. (acquired by Avant! Corporation), and Smartshop
(acquired by CNet Networks, Inc.).
Mr. Fung is on the judging panel of numerous business plan contests,
including the prestigious MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition (which
he co-founded in 1989) and the Harvard Business School Business Plan
Contest. Mr. Fung serves on the Investment Committee of the University
of Massachusetts Foundation, Inc.
Mr. Fung earned a BS (Summa Cum Laude) in Computer Systems Engineering,
from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, an MS in Computer Science
from UCLA, and an SM in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
At MIT Sloan School, he completed his Master’s Thesis “Venture Capital
in the Far East: A Comparative Study” in May 1990.
Mr. Fung was born and raised in Hong Kong, and resides in the United
States.
